A vertical capstan winch is a machine with a rotating drum driven by an electric motor around a vertical main shaft. It is usually installed vertically on the deck, which can greatly facilitate offshore operations. Capstans use a vertical shaft, allowing machinery, such as electric motors, to be placed below the deck. According to the installation method, there are through-deck winches and semi-through-deck winches.
